Waste Pro Scholar Athlete of the Week

Waste Pro and My68 are proud to recognize area scholar athletes with the Waste Pro Scholar Athlete Program!

Watch My68 each week to see which local high school students are selected for this honor. Each weekly recipient will be awarded a special plaque and recognized on television as the "Waste Pro Scholar Athlete of the Week".

At the end of the season, one of these scholar athletes will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship courtesy of Waste Pro!

Your video entry must tell us in your own words why you deserve the scholarship. The following four points must be included in order for you to be considered:
• Grade Point Average / Academic Standing

Scholar Athlete of the Week

Scholar AthleteEach week, local high school's athletic directors, teachers, counselors and/or principals will select one high school athlete to be the Scholar Athlete of the Week. The selected student will be recognized on air during halftime of a Thursday Night Lights game broadcast. All Scholar Athletes selected will have a chance of winning a $5,000 scholarship to the college or university he/she plans to attend.

Cullman High School

Joshua, an athlete since the age of five, encourages his team, offers a helping hand to others, and displays a great work ethic.  Off the field, this Sportsman Award Winner is a long standing member of the Leo Club, involved in the SGA, and takes the most rigorous courses offered at Cullman High School.

Walker High School

Carson Roberts of Walker High School is going into his third years as starting quarterback and there is no question that he is dedicated to academics as well -- as evidenced by his GPA of 4.4898, ACT score of 32, and his membership in the National Honor Society.

Dora High School

Andrew Alexander of Dora High School is the Bulldogs starting linebacker and tight end.  He is equally adept in the classroom, as his 4.0 GPA and many academic interests attest.  Andrew was also voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by his senior class.

Corner High School

Corner High School's Cody Cose, a two year starter with the Yellow Jackets, is a proud member of the Beta Clue and the National Honor Society.  Cody is also a member of the youth choir at his church.  His college plans include majoring in Pre-Med.

Anniston High School

Anniston High School's Shakale Ashford plays cornerback for the Bulldogs, while assisting with the Childrens Department at Faith Outreach Ministry.  He's planning to study business in college.  The future is bright for Shakale Ashford.

Lincoln High School

Jeffrey Roberts of Lincoln High School is a three year starter for the Golden Bears football team, as well as a member of the Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and the SGA.  He also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and has been class president for the past two years.

Hoover High School

Matt McCay of Hoover High School was a member of Hoover's 2009 State Championship Team, but he's not only about athletics.  Matt is also a member of the Latin Club and Mu Alpha Theta with a 4.17 GPA.

Spain Park High School

Justin Carter of Spain Park High School has been a three year starter for the football team, while working on projects for Habitat for Humanity.  But his 4.0 GPA and 33 on the ACT show he's dedicated to excellence in the classroom.

Fabian Zinnerman of Talladega High School is a Talladega Tiger's four-year starter, an Eagle Scout, and is active in the National Honor Society and the FCA...but he still finds time to be active in his church and community.  Congrats Fabian!

Cordova High School

Cordova High School's Theo Werling ended the 2010 football season with 124 tackles for his Blue Devils...but his greatest work was off the field, helping deliver food and supplies to the people of his city when it was ravaged by tornadoes.

Holly Pond High School

Raeven Gilley of Holly Pond High School has excelled at both Varsity Volleyball and Softball, while volunteering in her community and serving on the Key Club and Beta Club.  She plans to attend Auburn University and pursue a career in Special Education.

Montevallo High School

Brett A. Gray won Montevallo High School's Team Sportsmanship Award for 2010 through 2011.  He also served as a camp counselor for the MDA, is a member of the NHA, and Mu Alpha Theta.  Brett is set to graduate this year with honors.

Northside High School

Northside High School's Brandon Hall is a two-year starter for the Rams football team, while volunteering for the Children's Hands On Museum and the Mayfield Fire Department.  Brandon plans to attend the University of Alabama and pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Spain Park High SchoolsSteven Crain has served ascaptain of his track team the past two years. Hes kept his eye on the ball in the classroom as well, as his4.02 GPAand 32 on the ACT attestall the while, Crain has also stayed active inhischurch and community.

Childersburg High Schools Jacob Ozment is a third year catcher for the varsity baseball team, while serving as President of the Student Government Association and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  He's also active in his church and community and plans to pursue a career as an Orthopedist.

Calera High Schools Michael Marfice is a member of the varsity baseball team while also participating in the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.  His future plans include attending the University of South Alabama and pursuing a career as a Pharmacist.

Congrats to Robert Burgess, our John Carroll Waste Pro Scholar Athlete of the Week! Robert is a team captain for his football squad, while also serving as a member of the NHS, the Spanish Honor Society, and the Classical Language Club. If this high achiever gets his way, he will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point!

Congrats to Ashley Coleman, our Hueytown High School Waste Pro Scholar Athlete of the Week! Ashley was a member of the 2010 Alabama High School Softball State Championship Team. She's also involved with the Beta Club and the National Honor Society, scored an impressive 30 on the ACT - and kept her GPA at a remarkable 4.25.

Etowah High School

While excelling at varsity football, Etowah County High Schools Ethan McMullins has also served as a member of the Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta.  He was recently voted SGA Treasurer and is set to graduate with an advanced academic diploma with honors.

Lincoln High School

Sharrod Cochran has a 3.1 GPA, is a committed member of his church, Antioch Missionary Baptist, and volunteers with local businesses.  Sharrod was a ASWA 2010 player of the week, was twice All County Talladega 2009 and 2010, and in 2010 combined for 1,700 passing and rushing yards for the Golden Bears.
